Manchester United fans were at overjoyed to hear the words of RB Leipzig forward, Timo Werner earlier in the season – “Playing in the Premier League is a dream for me. I would like to play for two or three clubs, and Manchester United are one of those clubs.”
Speculation of a possible transfer was rife among the United faithful but all of it whithered when Werner came out with a supporting statement in recent weeks after being heavily linked with the club – “Next year, definitely, I will stay in Leipzig.”
Now, this would come as a huge blow to the Old Trafford side, who are trying to match strides with their bitter rivals, Manchester City in terms of the talent pool both sides can acquire. Pep Guardiola and the Citizens are in the lead by 16 points ahead of the Red Devils.
The only thing Mourinho can do is prepare for the following season and put up a better title-fight against the Noise Neighbours by signing even more World Class talents.
Werner is one of the hottest talents in European football right now and has been pegged to follow in the footsteps of Miroslav Klose and Thomas Mueller for the German national team.
He will be upholding that promise by showcasing his talent on the world stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup this June.
Werner is already a versatile presence who can appear on almost any position on the final third, be it from either of the flanks or as a lone striker. His keen eye for goal at such a young age along with a turn of pace which is next to none makes him one of the most lethal threats in the Bundesliga.
The Stuttgart-born attacker has been nothing short of brilliant ever since his arrival to the Red Bull Arena in June 2016. He has netted the ball 38 times in 67 all around appearances for the Bulls, 17 of those goals have come this season.
It would have been one of the biggest acquisition in United’s history judging by the promise Werner has showcased at such a young age. However, it also would have meant the exit of at least one player from the Red Devils squad, most probably Marcus Rashford.
The latter has been a revelation of his own over the past couple of seasons and is one of the best prospects to come out of the United academy. With Martial and recent arrival, Alexis Sanchez in the lineup, United might have lost out on too much and should look to expend their resources towards more pressing issues, like the defence for instance.
