Borussia Dortmund winger Marco Reus has signed a new long-term deal to extend his stay at the Westfalenstadion for the coming years. It has been confirmed that the German international has penned a new five-and-a-half-year deal to stay at the Bundesliga club until the summer of 2023. His previous deal was set to expire at the end of the current campaign which caught the attention of Liverpool. According to the club’s chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke, the 28-year-old turned down some of “the best clubs in the world” in favour of extending his stay at Dortmund.
Reus expressed his delight after signing a new long-term contract and was quoted to have said, “I am happy and proud to be able to announce today that I’ll continue to wear the shirt of Borussia.
“Dortmund is my home, the BVB is my club. Since my childhood I dreamed in black and yellow to run and play for this club.
“This signature is a clear sign of the future. The fact that I can renew my commitment to the club today is also a thank you to our fantastic fans who have always helped me.”
Reus has been plagued with injuries this season and has only made 7 appearances for the German giants scoring 3 goals in all competitions.
With Reus looking set to stay in Germany for the coming years, let’s take a look at three potential alternatives for the Reds to consider next summer.
Hirving Lozano
The PSV Eindhoven attacker has been in exceptional form this season and has put in some dazzling displays in the Dutch Eredivisie. The 22-year-old Mexican international has scored 15 goals and made 10 assists in 27 appearances for the Dutch club this season in all competitions. He is exactly the kind of talent that the Reds should look for next summer. The youngster has bags of potential and can develop into a star for Liverpool in the coming years if the Merseyside club decides to opt for his services.
Leon Bailey
The Bayer 04 Leverkusen winger has been majestic for his club in this campaign and has lit up the Bundesliga with his performances so far. The 20-year-old Jamaican has scored 11 goals and made 5 assists in 25 matches for the Bundesliga club this term across all competitions. He has the makings of a future star and the Reds can look to capitalise on his potential by signing him up this summer.
Mikel Oyarzabal
The 20-year-old Spanish winger has featured in 32 matches for Real Sociedad this season and has found the back of the net 9 times and provided seven assists across all competitions so far. He is another prospect who has the capability to flourish under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield if the club opts for his signature in the near future.
