Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a major blow as their long-time target Pau Lopez has rejected the move to North London for Real Betis. The RCD Espanyol shot-stopper will be out of a contract in the summer and Mauricio Pochettino was eager to sign him up for free.
However, according to latest revelations, the goalkeeper will remain in the La Liga for the next season and Spurs will have to look for replacements.
Tottenham’s goalkeeper position is currently occupied by Hugo Lloris, the number one choice for the France national team as well. His understudy is Michel Vorm with Paulo Gazzaniga and Alfie Whiteman as the backup options.
Pochettino has come to terms with the overwhelming pressure that comes from participating in multiple competitions within a single season. Their European campaign has been impressive even though Juventus got the better of them in the Round of 16.
Their domestic campaign can also be applauded if they finish in the top-4 with a promise of a title win next season. Their title challenge has suffered this season due to the presence of the Champions League and Pochettino will be eager to correct those mistakes.
One way of doing so is to sign more players and follow Manchester City’s blueprint. However, that might be unrealistic for clubs who do not drown themselves in pots of cash every day.
While Tottenham’s resources are limited here are a few options they can consider to replace Pau.
Nick Pope
The Burnley man has been a revelation this season by showcasing his set of skills in between the sticks. Tom Heaton’s injury came with silver lining and Pope was exactly that.
Every Burnley fan will agree that Pope is deserved of a first-team spot after the performances he has put up this season. However, it will be hard to bench Heaton who is the club captain and is a long-serving favourite of Sean Dyche.
If unsettlement issues do arise after this season, Tottenham can pick up on the scent. Whether Pope will agree to play backup to Lloris is uncertain.
Berke Ozer
The 17-year-old is dubbed to be the ‘Turkish Donnarumma’ and is attracting a lot of attention from the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund. Tottenham should take note of the youngster’s capabilities as his contract is winding down to an end after 2018/19 season.
Joe Hart
His contract with Manchester City will be over after this season and the Englishman will be available for free. Crystal Palace are strongly considering the option and Spurs can make a swoop.
