Marcus Rashford turned out to be the hero as his 10-minute brace in the first half was enough to decide Liverpool’s trip to Old Trafford this weekend. Jose Mourinho’s men looked comfortable at the start of the game, soaking up the pressure and Rashford, who got on to the end of a Romelu Lukaku header, finished with some finesse to give his side the lead.
He added another, thanks to a deflection from young Trent Arnold and though Liverpool were given a lifeline in the second half through Eric Bailly’s own goal, they were not able to build on it and left with nothing to show for their efforts. United now opened up a five-point gap over Liverpool in the 2nd place and here are the player ratings for the Red Devils in this game:
David de Gea (6):
Could do nothing to stop the own goal and had very little to do otherwise as Liverpool failed to test him till late in the game.
Antonio Valencia (6):
Dug deep and stood firm at everything Liverpool threw at him and did well to frustrate them for most of the evening.
Eric Bailly (6):
Was solid for most of the game and though the own goal was a blemish, will be relieved that it did not cost his side anything.
Chris Smalling (6):
Struggled for most of the game against Mo Salah but kept him quite and deserves the victory.
Ashley Young (6):
Got forward on a number of occasions and did well to shut down space on the left flank for Salah, making Liverpool’s attack blunt.
Nemanja Matic (7):
Won the midfield battle almost every time he had to and did well to keep his side on the front foot whenever he had a ball.
Scott McTominay (7):
Got the better of the Ox and did nothing wrong to his role in the side.
Juan Mata (6):
Added numbers to the midfield but did very little to have an impact on Karius’ goal.
Alexis Sanchez (6):
Ran his socks off and though was not involved in a goal directly, did well to keep Liverpool defenders on their toes.
Marcus Rashford (8):
Was the difference between the two sides as he got the beating of TAA and took the game away from Liverpool in just over 10 minutes.
Romelu Lukaku (6):
Won the battle against Dejan Lovren and was involved in most of the attacks in the first half but cut an isolated figure as United dropped deep late in the game.
Substitutes:
Marouane Fellaini (7):
Came on for Rashford and did well to add mettle and presence in the box, helping his side see off a nervous end to the game.
