As per one of the latest reports by talkSPORT, Liverpool’s out-of-favour goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet, has fallen on the radar of Borussia Dortmund and Napoli. Mignolet’s stature under the tutelage of Jurgen Klopp has diminished considerably and he has been serially overlooked by Klopp in Liverpool’s starting line-up.
The 30-year-old has not featured for the Reds since January and there is no denying that he must be getting frustrated with his current situation. He is in that phase of his career where he would be looking to ply his trade regularly and considering the reports that have emerged, it seems that he would have a number of options to choose from if he leaves Anfield in the summer.
Liverpool are a club on the rise and are looking strong domestically as well as in Europe. They managed to steer their way into the last eight of the Champions League for the first time since 2009 by bulldozing past FC Porto in the Round of Sixteen fixture and are in a strong position to finish inside the top-four spots in the Premier League. They are indeed going in the right direction.
However, they need to sort their goalkeeping woes once the curtains of the summer transfer window get lifted. They have been on the look-out for a new shot-stopper for quite some time now but they have not been able to find the right man. The five-time Champions League winners have Simon Mignolet, Loris Karius, Danny Ward and Adam Bogdan in their books to meet their goalkeeping needs.
Of late, Karius has been getting quite a lot of time between the sticks and the primary reason for the same is due to the fact that Mignolet cannot be relied on.
The former Sunderland goalkeeper has drawn a lot of criticism due to his erratic performances with the gloves and there has been an apparent lack of confidence in the manner in which he has discharged his duties when he is called upon more often than not.
With the likelihood of Mignolet’s exit increasing rapidly, Liverpool shouldn’t really mind sanctioning his exit. In all fairness, Klopp’s side need someone who has the requisite experience under his belt, is good with reflexes and decision making and who has can bark orders at the defenders. A substantial upgrade over Mignolet is the call of the hour and it would be interesting to see what Liverpool do about this issue in the summer.
