Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing 17-year-old Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham were dealt a huge blow as Paris Saint-Germain shifted their attention towards the young left-back.
Reports earlier claimed that Spurs were preparing a bid of £35m for the services of the highly praised U19 England international who has netted the ball 13 times and registered 4 assists in 36 EFL Championship outings for the Lillywhites this season.
The fans at Wembley were resting easily over the latest revelations where the player was reported to be interested in a move to the North London club only, despite attracting heavy interests from other Premier Leauge outfits.
However, with PSG in the talks, this is a whole another ball game due to their astronomical financial capabilities. Let’s just say that the ball is in Fulham’s court and the £50m valuation they have put up might just be met next summer.
The Ligue 1 giants would certainly not be sweating over the price tag but Tottenham might. Their resources are limited compared to PSG’s and Pochettino will have to play his cards right.
On 9th August 2016, Sessegnon made his debut for the Fulham senior team at the age of 16 years and 81 days old. Teams from all over Europe, mostly from the Premier League has taken note of the teenager’s talents as he continues to amaze the crows in the Eglish second division.
He marked down his first contract with Fulham on 18th May 2017 which is set to run till the summer of 2020.
Mostly operating from the left-back position, the U19 England international is capable of playing upfront in the wing position as well. The future of Sessegnon is well laid towards stardom and the switch to top-flight football seems like the right step in his career.
Wherever he ends up going, Sessegnon’s priority should be to find maximum game time as that will ensure his meteoric rise and a definitive future in the English national team. Pochettino always favours younger professionals and has assembled one of the youngest teams in the Premier League over the past 4 years.
The current Tottenham lineup features Ben Davies in the left-back position, a Wales international who used to be Danny Rose’s understudy last season. Even Rose used to be the club’s young prodigies who has flourished into a full-fledged professional over the past 5 years.
The prospects of playing for PSG might seem prestigious from a distance but it is not better than that of Tottenham. It would be wise for Sessegnon to really consider his options ahead of the following season and Tottenham should brace themselves for losing out on the teenage sensation. Maybe letting Rose leave under any circumstances is not their best play here.
