Liverpool, currently on a roll, are eyeing to end their season on a high despite losing out Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona this winter. A few names, however, are being linked to a move to Anfield following the closure of the ongoing campaign. One familiar name has surfaced recently yet again which is known for rumbling up the Liverpool rumour mill in almost every transfer window.
There’s no reward for guessing though; he is none other than Marco Reus of Borussia Dortmund, the 28-year-old German attacker, whose has recently returned to the team after recovering from an ACL injury. Reus is lauded as German’s one of the finest players of the current era whose career growth has been marred by frequent long-standing injuries that cost him his World Cup dreams four years back. The former Borussia Monchengladbach winger was brought back to BVB in January 2012 where he had a promising spell in their academy ranks. Jurgen Klopp, the current Liverpool boss, groomed him and took his game to the next level as he started fulfilling his potential and earned the utmost fame for the Black and Yellows.
Reus is soon to enter his final 12 months of the current contract at Signal Iduna Park but is back to his absolute best with 3 goals from 4 Bundesliga outings since his return. It is, however, quite uncertain whether he will be offered a new long-term a deal and Liverpool, his rumoured long-term admirers, might finally wrap up a deal that will see him reuniting with his former mentor Jurgen Klopp as reported by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
Liverpool have a lethal front trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane who have already netted 68 goals altogether across all competitions so far this term and have not let the Reds feel the absence of star Brazilian Philippe Coutinho. Reus, on the other hand, is a perfect fit in Liverpool’s high pressing ( known as ‘gegenpressing’ in his country) game as he has grown up practising the same under the charismatic German gaffer. He has speed, deadly from the counter and holds great vision as well as the sense of passing. He loves to cut inside from the wide, does layoffs pretty often and links up swiftly with fellow attackers in order to open up space which creates more goal-scoring opportunities up front.
Although he will be 29 in a couple of months time, Reus is far from a spent force and needs to stay fit to make it to Joachim Low’s World Cup squad this time around. Liverpool, however, will be a suitable destination as the manager knows how to grind out the best out of him despite his injury nightmares in recent years. He will be a massive influence in the attack with versatility and still has at least a couple of years of football left in him. Reus needs to shake off all the disappointment now and explore new opportunities to end his career on a high note. Liverpool will certainly be benefited from his mastery, but the German international, too, needs a club of Liverpool’s stature to reclaim his excellence in world football.
