Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama is seeking a new contract at Spurs after both Liverpool and Manchester United have registered their interest in the player. According to recent reports, the Premier League duo are interested in securing his services in the summer. United are set to lose Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini at the end of the season whereas the Reds could part ways with Emre Can with his contract set to expire next summer.
Wanyama is considered as one of the best in the Premier League in his position. However, he has recently struggled with injuries which has kept him out of action for the bulk of the season. The 26-year-old has slowly returned to full fitness but is still vying for a place in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting eleven. The recent form of Eric Dier and Mousa Dembélé has kept him out of the Spurs team of late.
Amongst increasing interest in his services, the ex-Southampton midfield enforcer has asked the club for a new and improved contract. The Kenya international’s current contract with the North London outfit runs until the summer of 2021.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are currently in 4th place in the Premier League standings, just five points above fifth-placed Chelsea with just 9 league matches remaining this term. The North London outfit are hoping to finish in the top 4 so that they can ensure Champions League football for the next campaign. They secured a comfortable 2-0 victory at home courtesy of a Heung-Min Son brace against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
However, Spurs are still a staggering 17 points behind the league leaders Manchester City and are in need dire need to retain some of their top players to help them in their quest of bridging the gap between themselves and the Manchester clubs in the coming years. At 26, Wanyama still has his peak years ahead of him which Spurs could look to utilise in the coming years.
The Kenyan midfielder is highly versatile and can play as a centre-back as well which makes him an ideal fit for any of his potential suitors. Wanyama has featured in 15 matches for Spurs this season and has found the back of the net once so far in all competitions. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in his future and whether the North Londoners comply with his demands and offer him a new contract to extend his stay in the Premier League.
