Swansea City are lining up a move for Celta Vigo centre-forward Borja Iglesias next summer. According to recent reports, the Swans are set to clash heads with Celtic in pursuit of the Spaniard’s signature. The 25-year-old is currently on loan at Real Zaragoza in the Spanish second tier and has found the back of the net 13 times this season while providing four assists in 28 appearances across all competitions. He has been in sparkling form in Spain which has alerted the Swans, who are keen to add him to their ranks ahead of the new campaign.
However, the Welsh outfit could face stiff competition from Celtic with their manager Brendan Rodgers on the lookout for a new striker in the summer transfer period given that Moussa Dembele is expected to depart the Glaswegian team at the end of the season. Iglesias has had spells with Valencia and Villarreal prior to making a switch to Celta Vigo in the summer of 2013, spending most of his time plying his trade in their B team with 75 goals in 146 matches. However, he has just managed to feature in just two games for the Galician side’s senior team.
Swansea City are pulling off a miracle comeback in the Premier League under new manager Carlos Carvalhal and are currently occupying 18th place in the Premier League table following a string of positive results in the league over the past few weeks which include victories over both Liverpool and Arsenal. They are still in danger of getting relegated at the end of the season with just goal difference separating them from 16th placed Southampton and 17th placed Crystal Palace respectively.
If they end up surviving the agony of being demoted to the Championship, then the addition of a forward of the calibre of Iglesias could definitely hand Carvalhal’s attacking options a major boost going into the new campaign. However, he is still unproven in English football and hasn’t experience football at the top level which makes his signing a huge gamble for the Swans as they try to establish themselves in the top tier of English football.
At 25, Iglesias still has his peak years ahead of him which the Welsh club could look to utilise in the coming years. Swansea City have scored a league-low 21 goals in 28 league matches so far this season so a new addition up top may turn out to be exactly what the doctor ordered for them to take the step and establish themselves as a midtable team vying for European places next term.
It remains to be seen whether the Swans can fend off stiff competition from the Hoops in pursuit of the Spaniard’s signature in the near future.
