By the look of the recent happenings, it seems that Leeds United have flattered to deceive the top flight English football for yet another season. With the club now rapidly falling out of the playoff race, here are three players they can target to make a fresh attempt next season.
Roque Mesa
The 28-year old midfielder arrived in Swansea City from La Liga this summer in an eleven million pound deal. His signature was a highlighted move as he was a popular player in the La Liga having recorded statistics of a 91.4 percent pass completion rate, the fourth best in a league constituting the likes of Isco, Iniesta, Modric, and company.
However, things have not exactly gone to plan for the Spanish midfielder. He has not featured regularly for the Swans this season and has only played just over 1000 minutes of Premier League action overall even after Carlos Carvalhal’s appointment. The most striking stat is the fact that in this duration he has been unable to create or score a single goal for the Swans.
It is not exactly the signing they were hoping for having spent such a huge amount on him. However, his quality is beyond doubt and Leeds United will have themselves a good player if they can wrap up his deal.
Étienne Capoue
French defensive midfielder Etienne Capoue has spent two happy years at Watford. The midfielder who can also play as a defender was brought in by Watford in the first week of July in 2015. Brought in from Tottenham Hotspur where he failed to get a regular starting berth, he was expected to be a mainstay at Watford. The player known for his stunning long-range goals has impressed in his two years at Watford. However, since the injury spell that saw him sidelined, the Frenchman has been unable to return to the starting eleven and is growing frustrated with his time on the bench. He could prove to be a steal for Leeds if they negotiate well.
Dwight Gayle
The striker who graduated from the Arsenal youth academy was in seriously good form last season when he helped Rafa Benitez’s men qualify for the English Premier League by clinching the Championship title. He has, however, been unable to repeat his heroics this time around leaving Newcastle in a tough state. The Magpies have endured a mixed start to their campaign in England’s top league. After a quick start, Newcastle United flopped and their loss in form saw them sink to the lower end of the table. Leeds could target Gayle as a potential replacement with their forwards playing some poor football this season.
