According to recent reports, Arsenal are looking into an overhaul of SSC Napoli duo, Lorenzo Insigne and Kalidou Koulibaly. Arsene Wenger needs to prioritize the signing of a wide man and a centre-half and by the looks of it is doing just that. Insigne is one of the best offensive players in the Serie A outfit and has been in prolific form this season.
The 26-year-old scored the ball on 10 occasions and has furthered 8 assists in 34 total appearances. Insigne is primarily a winger by trade but can appear centrally in a more creative role as well.
Standing at just 5 feet 4 inches tall, the Napoli man is one of the agilest players in world football. His short structure allows him to weave his way through the opposition defence and take on defenders on the flanks. Scintillating pace and a low centre of gravity make him one of the hardest players to get off the ball.
Insigne has been capped at international level 21 times for the Italian senior team. Rising from the ranks of Napoli benches, Insigne is quite clearly one of the brightest talents in European football and it would be a steal to get him ahead of the following campaign.
However, is he the right fit at Arsenal? The Gunners have bolstered the club ranks through the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund for £60m. They have also signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan on a swap deal for their wantaway former winger, Alexis Sanchez.
Mesut Ozil has also been handed over a massive contract and extensions are being prepared for both Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey.
Arsenal are a bit understaffed in the wing department after the exit of both Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain over the past two windows. The club already has ball dominant players like Ozil and Mkhitaryan in the final third who needs a player to launch ball towards on the flanks.
And this is the dilemma that Wenger will have to face over shifting the creative responsibilities around the whole team. While Insigne is a huge threat from the left wing, he prefers to make his mark on the game with the ball under his feet majority of the time.
If anybody, Wenger is an experienced head who can implement the Italian into the current squad. Insigne can be the final piece to Arsenal’s attacking jigsaw and lead them to an improved 2018/19 campaign if he ends up making the move to the Emirates.
