Every manager has his own signature style of play and a philosophy, which they alone bring into world football. If there is one thing you can expect from a Jose Mourinho side, it is that his defence will make you work hard to put one past them. Over 15 years into the game of management and Mourinho has managed four to five world-class sides. The one thing common is that the teams had mean defences which would be rock hard to crack.
Currently, Mourinho is leading the title siege for the red half at Manchester. A disappointing league campaign last season that was primarily down to the lack of goals, United have turned things around to an extent this season. They have reinforced their attacking line with the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.
However, it did not mean that his defence has loosened up simply because his forward line has been upgraded. In fact, Mourinho’s men have conceded just 19 goals in the league this season, the best defensive record in England. On paper now, the Red Devils boast of an extremely talented attack but their defence is still shaky and has been bailed out multiple times by the brilliance of David De Gea.
It is believed that Jose Mourinho wants to now reorganize his backline and is ready to part ways with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. He, however, wants to continue with Argentine ace Marcos Rojo. If Jones and Smalling were to empty up space at the back, Rojo would definitely be one of the first choice defenders at United.
The 27-year-old suffered a cruciate ligament injury last season and has played only 10 games for the club since. However, Mourinho sees him as an important cog in his Old Trafford campaign and wants the club to tie him down to a new contract.
Rojo will have exactly one year left on his contract come May and will be free to negotiate deals with a club outside the Premier League come next January unless United negotiate a new contract with him. The player’s development has been monitored by French giants Paris Saint Germain who are keen to sign the player for as much as £30 million.
This would mean that United will have to act quickly if they wish to retain Rojo and they would also know that having Mourinho in charge would mean that it will be an absolute must to have a steady backline thereby making Rojo’s situation all the more important; otherwise things can unravel quickly for the Portuguese as was evident in his second spell at Chelsea.
