Reports have emerged that Arsenal are looking towards making an offer for Manchester United left-back, Luke Shaw. The 22-year-old will be out of contract in June 2019 and has been at the heart of speculation leading up to the January transfer window. However, Mourinho has awarded Shaw with 5 starts in the 8 games United has played this year and this has shone a different light on what seemed like an out-of-favour defender.
Manchester United’s weakest link this season has been the left-back position. Mourinho has opted to field Ashley Young as a makeshift option ahead of seasoned veterans like Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian. Luke Shaw’s career in a United shirt has not gone seamlessly ever since his arrival in the summer of 2014.
A horrific leg break ended his impressive run of form that he showcased during his time with Southampton. Ever since his return, Shaw has been riddled with consecutive bouts on the sidelines unable to remain fit for a run of games. He was once pegged to be the next in line to start on the left of the England national team defence but 4 years later, he is no longer even in consideration under Gareth Southgate.
Dry chances are not ideal for the 22-year-old who would like nothing better than to wear the proud white uniform for his country in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He is currently enjoying a few starts with a possibility of signing a long-term contract with the Old Trafford club. His current contract of £80,000-a-week is expected to rise to £120,000-£150,000.
However, no words have come out of the club ranks about an extension just yet and Shaw is yet to hear from the United hierarchy. Mourinho wanted to bring in a proven left-back in January but had to prioritize the move for Alexis Sanchez. He might scour the market for possible additions in the summer and this would delegate Shaw to another season as a rotational option.
If the former-Saints man wants to make the exit, the time is now and he should start entertaining offers from the Premier League clubs.
Arsenal’s offer might not be the best one for him though. They already have Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac in the position with the youngster, Ainsley Maitland-Niles as the backup option. Wenger is interested to make a few changes to the defence but he would ideally want to bring in a centre-half, not a wingback.
Shaw is better off biding his time with the Red Devils rather than making a move to the Emirates.
