Rangers FC are looking into extending the contract of their star attacking midfielder, Josh Windass beyond the summer of 2020. The Scottish Premiership outfit has just handed over a three-and-a-half-year extension to their right-back James Tavernier and would like to reward Windass as well for his contribution this season.
The £60,000 purchase from Accrington Stanley has been an eye-catching performer out of the 14 to enter the Ibrox stadium in 2016 summer transfer window. Windass scored two more goals in last weekend’s 6-1 destruction of Ayr United to make it 12 goals in all competitions for the English attacker this season. He has also set up his teammates on 8 occasions.
The 24-year-old playmaker cemented his starting spot under Graeme Murty and has been rotated around all over the pitch. It seems like Mark Warburton’s decision to sign Windass on a four-year deal is paying off as his value has risen significantly higher over the past 18 months and the Gers will probably land seven-figure sum if they agree to sell him.
However, sending him away is out of the question as Rangers are looking to keep him for a long time. Windass played his early footballing days with Huddersfield Town before being let go in 2012 December. He began his professional career with Harrogate Railway Athletic and instantly started to draw attention from England’s upper-tier sides.
He used to be a construction worker and a semi-professional footballer at the same time, which was tough and eventually Accrington provided him with a full-time contract in the summer of 2013. He made 83 total appearances for the League Two club and found the back of the net 23 times. Windass has been through the roughs to make it in the big stage and thriving in Scotland’s top-flight is no coincidence.
Rangers are trying to match strides with their rivals and league winners, Celtic and having players like Windass in the team only furthers their cause. The fans at Ibrox Stadium are pleased to see their side contending for the league title after winning promotion last year but on the other hand, are disappointed to see Celtic win their seventh consecutive league title.
They no longer can stand the supremacy of the Hoops and Graeme Murty’s men are focusing on challenging for the top spot next season and winning the Scottish Cup this season. They have been successful in holding onto the services of their best attacker, Alfredo Morelos and will have to meet his contractual demands as well. If they do the final third will be well structured with the trio of Windass, Morelos and Jamie Murphy.
