Crystal Palace have held talks to secure the services of Brazilian goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri who is a free agent at the moment. According to recent reports in the English media, the Eagles are currently negotiating over a potential deal to bring the veteran keeper to Selhurst Park. The 35-year-old is a free agent after scraping his contract with Fluminense and the Premier League side are eager to add cover for their first choice keeper Wayne Hennessey. Roy Hodgson’s side also has a deal lined up for Getafe’s Spanish keeper Vicente Guaita for the summer. However, Palace boss Roy Hodgson is looking for an immediate option and the ex-Liverpool keeper Cavalieri may fit the bill.
The Eagles are hoping to add more depth to their squad with the club desperately trying to avoid suffering the agony of relegation to the English Championship at the end of the season. The Sao Paulo born keeper has a wealth of experience in the Brazilian Serie A from his time at Fluminense after he joined the South American club from AC Cesena in the winter transfer period of 2011. He is yet to experience Premier League football but has lined up for Liverpool in the FA Cup.
Crystal Palace are currently occupying 15th place in the Premier League table with a tally of 27 points after 27 league matches in this campaign. They have been in terrific form in the league since Roy Hodgson’s appointment as the club’s new boss in September last year. The Eagles have made a remarkable turnaround in recent weeks but are still not completely out of relegation trouble with just a point separating them from the drop zone. The addition of an experienced goalkeeper like Cavalieri will undoubtedly bolster the Palace manager’s goalkeeping options going into the final stretch of the season.
The Eagles are in dire need of some favourable results in the coming weeks to try and avoid getting themselves involved in the relegation dogfight with just six points separating 10th placed Bournemouth to 19th placed Stoke City in the league table. The Premier League relegation race is set to go down to the wire so Cavalieri’s potential acquisition could turn out to be a shrewd piece of business by the Selhurst Park outfit.
The Brazilian has made 247 appearances in the Brazilian Serie A conceding 289 goals and keeping 73 clean sheets in the process. It remains to be seen whether the Eagles are successful in luring him to ply his trade in the Premier League.
