Crystal Palace lost a third time in the last 17 games, 3 goals to 1 against Everton at Goodison Park. They put up a resolute display against a motivated 9th placed team who were coming off an embarrassing loss themselves. Everton was largely restricted to shots from distance and set pieces.
But early in the second half, Palace’s hard work was undone as Gylfi Sigurdsson latched onto the ball just outside the area and his shot deflected past Wayne Hennessey to give Everton the lead.
Oumar Niasse made it 2-0 just minutes later when Patrick Van Aanholt decided to leave him completely open near the six-yard box. The Senegalese headed in Cuco Martina’s cross well away from the Palace goalkeeper.
Luka Milivojevic’s penalty effort to give Eagles a fighting chance came too late after Tom Davies’ goal made it 3 goals for the hosts. it was too little, too late as the Eagles were beaten at Goodison Park, leaving them in the thick of the battle at the bottom.
Crystal Palace Player Ratings:
Wayne Hennessey – 6/10
The Welshman did not have much to do in the opening half and was limited to just one save. The goals were completely out of his reach.
Joel Ward – 5/10
Returned to the starting line up, and had a steady first half, but the second goal came from his area of the field as Palace failed to clear.
Timothy Fosu-Mensah – 5/10
Got featured in the centre-back away from his usual role on the right and put in a decent shift. His marking was a bit off.
James Tomkins – 7/10
He made quite a few crucial interceptions to win his side the ball but eventually was at the losing end of the battles.
Patrick van Aanholt – 5/10
Not the best defensive effort but provided a lot going forward with appetizing deliveries into the box.
Luka Milivojevic – 5/10
Had very few touches in the heart of the park and took a good shot in the first half but disappeared in the late stages.
Yohan Cabaye – 6/10
He was good tonight creatively and created a few half chances. Drilled in a dipping shot towards Pickford only to be snapped away.
James McArthur – 4/10
His game was off the natural tempo of the opposition attacks. Struggled to hold on to possession and gave away free kicks in dangerous positions.
Andros Townsend – 5/10
Very mediocre showing by the former Tottenham man. Could have handled a few of the touches better to set up his teammates.
Alexander Sorloth – 7/10
Making his debut for Palace, he put in a good shift, playing out wide. He won several headers and almost scored with a good header in the second half.
Christian Benteke – 4/10
How many chances will he be given to prove his worth? Very frustrating display from the Belgian as both of his headed efforts drifted wide from goal.
