Chelsea will have to start fending off interests from Paris Saint-Germain over their first choice number nine, Alvaro Morata. The Ligue 1 side are prepared to make a sizeable offer in the summer and are already monitoring his progress at Stamford Bridge.
Right after his £60m move to West London, the 25-year-old hit the ground running scoring 8 goals in quick successions. But ever since his injury snags in the months of October and September, Morata has managed to increase that tally to only 12 goals so far in 31 total appearances. It is no secret that Morata has struggled in front of goal for Chelsea this season which indirectly prompted the Blues to pursue a competent second choice option in Olivier Giroud. The former Galactico has received a decent amount of quality service from his teammates but has failed miserably to convert the all-important chances.
He is currently serving another spell on the sidelines and is without a certain return date. In his absence, Antonio Conte has opted to field Eden Hazard in the unfamiliar striker role and the team has looked less than impressive. The Blues suffered their second consecutive loss against Watford last night – 4 goals to 1. Conte’s men allowed the Hornets to slot in the 3 goals in the late stages and Hazard was left to fight his own battles all by his own in the Watford half.
Right after Olivier Giroud got substituted in, Chelsea started to look their usual self but still ended up getting demolished a second time following the 0-3 thrashing to Bournemouth at home last week.
The entire dysfunction between the manager and the Chelsea board is starting to drip all over the club’s title challenge and with the Champions League Round of 16 fast approaching, something has to be done to get the club back on track. Morata will have to shake off the mental fatigue and work his way out of the slump that he is stuck in. Returning his game to top-pedigree standards rests on his shoulders alone as he will look to do just that after he gets back to full fitness.
If he does get back to his usual self, it will be highly unlikely a move to France will be sanctioned by either Conte or the next manager – if such a situation does arise. Morata still has heaps of talent inside him which is well suited to the English game. The Chelsea faithful are patiently waiting for his resurrection to superstar standards.
