Antonio Conte has expressed his desire to sign Lazio defender Stefan De Vrij. John Terry who is 35 recently suffered an injury and will be out for almost 10 days and with Terry not getting any younger, the time to consider a replacement for him is ripe.
Chelsea had earlier signed David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain and Marcos Alonso from Serie A side Florentina on the deadline day to strengthen their defence. However, the Dutch defender who joined Lazio from Eredivisie side Feyenoord could be the solution to Conte’s defensive problems.
Lazio had earlier rejected a £34million offer from the Blues for the central defender. De Vrij who is a brilliant passer of the ball and has an excellent positional sense is also an important part of the Dutch national side. He has 30 caps for the national team.
Chelsea had also failed to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and with Juventus reluctant to release Bonucci, De Vrij could be Conte’s solution to his defensive worries.
