Tottenham Hotspur have been one of the quietest clubs in the January transfer market. They have already allowed six youngsters to leave on loan this month but are yet to add a single star to their first team, which could come back to haunt them in the business end of the season.
However, Mauricio Pochettino’s men may land an exciting star in Lucas Moura from PSG before 11 pm today. And they might now be ready to let yet another one of their star players leave on loan before the deadline.
According to reports, Premier League outfit Southampton are interested in taking Argentine playmaker Erik Lamela to St Mary’s for the rest of the season. It is understood that the Brazil winger will be unveiled as a Spurs player later today and this could see Pochettino sanction Lamela’s move to Southampton. So is he what the Saints need?
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men sold Virgil van Dijk for record money earlier in the window and have only added Argentine striker Guido Carrillo to their squad so far this month. But the manager is still not completely convinced of the options at his disposal and wants Lamela to make sure that they have no danger of relegation.
Standing second from bottom, the Saints definitely need some quality and Lamela is as good an option as any. He is only expected to move on loan but will be of huge help for Southampton, in avoiding the drop this season.
25-year old Lamela is an exciting playmaker, who has a gifted technique and a great understanding of the game. He is an innovative player and was in sensational form for Spurs before he picked up a nasty injury, that put him out of the game for almost a year.
He has struggled to break into the first team since his return and will be more than happy to find some game time at St Mary’s until the end of the season.
He can create chances playing in a no.10 role and is also lethal in front of goal. He will walk into the front line at Southampton, alongside the likes of Dusan Tadic and Guido Carrillo who will probably be their first choice attackers for the rest of the season.
He can play in a number of roles and already has 96 PL appearances and it is quality and experience of this order that Southampton needs to extend their stay in the top flight.
