Celtic have seen their second bid rejected by Motherwell in pursuit of their goalkeeper Trevor Carson. According to recent reports in the English press, the Steelmen have turned down another offer from the Hoops for their prized goalkeeping asset. It was revealed earlier this morning that the Glaswegian side had tabled a £375,000 bid last night for the 29-year-old Northern Ireland ace following their initial £200,000 offer, which was rejected earlier this week.
Brendan Rodgers’ side are on the lookout for some cover today following the loss of Craig Gordon’s services for up to three months after he fell victim to a knee injury. Some sources are claiming that Motherwell are holding out for a fee in the region of £750,000, which is their asking price for the player. Carson signed for the Steelmen from Hartlepool United for just £10,000 last summer. Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson has confessed yesterday that it could turn out to be a “nightmare scenario” if they are to lose their goalkeeper in the current transfer window. However, with Celtic edging ever closer to meeting Motherwell’s asking price, a deal could still be on the cards with the transfer deadline fast approaching.
It is also being reported that the Scottish Premiership champions are considering another bid for the keeper but have other alternatives lined up as well, which includes the possibility of sealing a move for either Dundee’s Scott Bain or Arsenal’s Emiliano Martínez.
Brendan Rodgers’ men are currently in cruise control and are leading the Scottish Premiership by 11 points after playing 24 times in the league so far. The addition of Carson will definitely help them replace the void left by their first-team goalkeeper Craig Gordon’s absence in the coming weeks. The 29-year-old Motherwell keeper has been in fairly good form and has kept 10 clean sheets this season. His recent record justifies why the Hoops are willing to go all out in pursuit of the talented Northern Irishman keeper.
Carson undoubtedly has the ability to fill in during Gordon’s injury layoff in the coming matches and compete with him for a place in Brendan Rodgers’ first-team at Celtic Park, after the Scottish keeper completes his recovery from injury.
It looks like it could be a race against time for the Hoops if they are to seal a move for the Northern Irish keeper.
