Celtic are plotting a move for Motherwell keeper Trevor Carson. According to a reliable report in the English media, Motherwell has rejected the Hoops’ previous offer for the 29-year-old. Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson has made his intentions known to Celtic that the Glaswegian club will have to dig much deeper if they are to secure the services of the Northern Ireland player before the transfer window comes to a close at the end of this month.
The Steelmen have already rejected Celtic’s initial bid of £250,000 for Carson’s signature. Brendan Rodgers’ side are looking to find some cover after losing Craig Gordon’s services for up to three months following a knee injury. Motherwell are looking for an offer in the region of £750,000 for their 29-year-old goalkeeper.
Carson joined the Steelmen from Hartlepool for just £10,000 in the summer. Motherwell boss Robinson has confessed that it could turn out to be a “nightmare scenario” to part ways with his goalkeeper with just a day to go in the current transfer window. However, he has also claimed that the goalkeeper won’t leave the club unless Celtic match their asking price. In a recent interview, he was quoted to have said, “I spoke to Brendan [on Monday] after he had the courtesy to ring me. We then passed it over to the money men, Alan Burrows and Peter Lawwell.
“They had a chat but realised our valuations were miles away from one another.
“That’s as far as it has gone at the minute. Trevor is a Motherwell player and will stay a Motherwell player until our valuations are met.
“He is very much committed to Motherwell. He has two-and-a-half years left on his contract and it’s 24 hours left until the close of the window, so people will be sold from this football club at the right price when we decide, not when others decide.
“It would certainly make things very difficult for me [if Celtic did meet Carson’s valuation]. Player’s valuations go up and down depending on what point in the window you’re at because the closer you are to the end then the timescale to replace them becomes very difficult.
“So it would have to be a very good bid for us to let Trevor go.
“But yeah, it would be the nightmare scenario if we had to let him go now.
“However, we always have things that we can do. Whether you can do that in 24 hours remains to be seen and hopefully we won’t have to do that.”
Celtic are currently leading the Scottish Premiership by 11 points after playing 24 league matches this season. The addition of Carson will definitely help them replace the void left by their first-choice goalkeeper Craig Gordon’s absence in the coming months. The 29-year-old Motherwell keeper has only conceded 32 goals in 28 league matches and kept 10 clean sheets in the process. It makes sense for the Hoops to go all out in pursuit of the talented Northern Irishman keeper.
It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Trevor Carson and whether the Glaswegian club are successful in landing his signature before the end of the month.
