Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been at loggerheads with the club president Florentino Perez and no longer wants to be a part of the club. His contract at the Santiago Bernabeu runs till 2021 but it would now seem that he is ready to move on.
His move would certainly see Manchester United be favourites to land the player. However, recently in an interview, Mourinho calmed any speculations of the Portuguese coming to Old Trafford. This has led to reports believing that Chelsea could be a shock candidate in line to land the goal-scoring forward.
The 32-year-old Real Madrid icon, widely regarded as one of the best players football has ever seen, moved to Madrid back in 2009. Real Madrid forked out a fortune back then for him to lure him away from Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United by making him the most expensive player in the world.
He has since gone on to win the best player of the year award on five occasions and become the club’s all-time leading goal scorer in the process. His eight-year stay at Madrid has seen him become an icon at the Bernabeu and Ronaldo’s goal-scoring feat has helped Real Madrid win every possible trophy available in club competition.
If his move to Chelsea should ever happen, it would see him play alongside the likes of Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard at Stamford Bridge. It would be a dream frontline for the Chelsea fans to see a player of such stature link up with Chelsea’s magician, Hazard. However, such reports are unlikely to ever prove true.
Ronaldo, who will turn 33 this year, is slowly entering the final phase of his career. As for Real Madrid, they must be very careful as to how they deal with the Ronaldo situation. The Spanish side has already reportedly stated that they have no intention of paying Ronaldo the 50m euros-per-year salary he is demanding, according to Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.
He has been an asset to the club and clearly has a few more years of top football left. Madrid has to be very delicate with their handling of such a world-class player as it will reflect poorly upon their already dismal record of dealing with club legends. Moreover, it will also set them up to help close deals for superstars in the future if their treatment of Ronaldo is of the highest class.
