Sunderland’s luck finally ran out after a nine-year spell at England’s premier competition came to an end last season when Sunderland was finally relegated last year. The club probably survived more relegation wars in the last ten years than the number of goals they scored last season. However, it was doom spelt all along for the Black Cats last season and after finishing rock bottom, they moved down to the Championship.
Things have not gone well for the Black Cats well this season either. Sunderland have just won five of their 28 league matches this season and with only 25 points on the board, they stand in the relegation zone. The club is 22nd in the Championship and looks set to drop further. After failing to guide an aimless Sunderland side to safety last season, Moyes resigned as the manager of the club in May this year. Simon Grayson who replaced the Scot got the sack after only eighteen games in charge.
It is a sad state of affairs for the club’s board and Martin Bain, the Chief executive of Sunderland and the former Rangers man who now have to motivate the new manager Chris Coleman and the team to not get relegated from the Championships.
Often in these situations, two tricks that always help is the arrival of new players and the team to get an out and out goal scorer. A goal scoring player can help lift the gloomy atmosphere at the club and build a new sense of hope upon which the club can base its rebuilding. Therefore the arrival of a new attacker could possibly solve two problems at once for Sunderland.
It is now being reported that Sunderland are now seeking to build on their numbers by bringing in Derby County striker Chris Martin on loan till the end of the season. They have already wrapped up a deal for Jake Clarke-Salter on loan from Chelsea and the 29-year-old from Derby County could be their second man to come in.
Sunderland has been given a new boost in their pursuit of the forward after Fulham pulled out of the chase for the player. The Lilywhites manager Slavisa Jokanovic has ruled out a move for Martin this winter.
Jokanovic told Get West London: “Martin won’t come back to Fulham. I make no comments on different rumours.”
Without mentioning the name of Martin, Sunderland boss Chris Coleman revealed that the deal is yet to be finalised, saying: “We thought that something was over the line but it is not at the minute. We have a deal with a club and we are waiting for an answer if you like, a decision from a player.”
The Rams and The Black Cats have finalized the deal and agreeing terms with the player remains the only complication to be resolved.
