West Ham United are looking to make a move for Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu. According to recent reports in the Spanish press, the Hammers boss David Moyes is looking to sign a right winger in this transfer window and could now pounce on the signature of the Spanish speedster. The 23-year-old made a return to his boyhood club Barcelona last summer but has fallen down the pecking order at the Nou Camp this season. With the new arrivals of Ousmane Dembele in the summer and Phillipe Coutinho in this current transfer window, the Spanish youngster’s chances of first-team football have become even more limited. A departure from Catalonia this month looks like a possible option for both the club and the player.
Deulofeu could now become an ideal asset for West Ham United and might be the solution to one of Moyes’ biggest problems at the East London club. The former Everton boss has already expressed his concerns as he is in dire need of a right winger right now following Michail Antonio’s injury which has sidelined the player in recent weeks. In an interview with the London Evening Standard, Moyes was quoted to have said,
“Michail Antonio has not fully recovered from a groin problem. Our medical people believe it could clear up in a couple of weeks but if not it could be more serious,”
“We’re not sure yet but if it is the latter – and that would be a real shame – we will need to go out to try to make a suitable signing this month because we will need someone who plays down that righthand side.”
The 23-year-old Spaniard could be the ideal solution to West Ham’s problems and a perfect addition to David Moyes’s current squad. The Hammers are currently occupying 11th place in the Premier League standings, and sit just four points above the relegation zone. The club has turned their fortunes for the better after the appointment of Moyes in November last year.
They might still face a potential relegation dogfight in the second half of the season so the Londoners need to recruit wisely in this transfer period to give themselves the best chance to avoid the drop and ensure their Premier League safety for another season.
Deulofeu has made 17 appearances for the Catalans this season, scoring 2 goals and making 3 assists in all competitions. He has previously experienced Premier League football at Everton and won’t need time to adapt to English football. It remains to be seen whether the Spaniard can become a success story at West Ham if the Hammers are able to lure him to east London.
