Manchester United are plotting a move for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes. According to recent reports in the Spanish media, the Red Devils are ready to make a move for the Portuguese international. Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has already completed the signing of the Chilean superstar Alexis Sanchez this week and is looking to make further recruits this month. However, he has lost Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s services who has moved the other way to Arsenal as part of the Sanchez deal.
Some sources are claiming that the Manchester club are ready to splash the cash again with Mourinho desperate to land the Barcelona midfielder’s signature before the transfer window comes to a close at the end of this month. The Portuguese manager is preparing a bid to seal a move for his fellow countryman who has struggled to find regular game time at the Nou Camp this season. He joined the La Liga leaders in the summer of 2016 from Valencia but has failed to impress for the Catalans with a possible departure now set to be on the cards in the near future.
Gomes has made a total of 20 matches across all competitions for Barcelona in this campaign but is yet to find the back of the net so far.
Manchester United are currently in second place in the Premier League standings with a tally of 53 points in 24 league matches. They would potentially be up there challenging for the league title on any other season but with their ‘noisy neighbours’ breaking records at the top of the Premier League table, the Red Devils currently find themselves 12 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side.
Mourinho could be looking to add some depth to his United squad in order to potentially bridge the gap between themselves and City going into the next campaign. The addition of Andre Gomes might be a clever move as the Portuguese midfielder could turn out to be a terrific squad player who can raise the level of competition in the United midfield. A report in Spain has also suggested that Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde will be willing to sell him if the right offer comes in for the player as he is keen to give him a lifeline in the near future.
The Red Devils would be hoping that this deal won’t fall through after failing to get Sergi Roberto and Samuel Umtiti who were also reported to be on the Special One’s transfer wish-list. It remains to be seen whether the Premier League club are successful in their attempts to lure the Portuguese midfielder to Old Trafford in the ongoing transfer window.
