Sunderland’s luck ran out last season after their nine-year spell at England’s premier competition came to an end last season when the Black Cats were finally relegated. The club probably survived more relegation wars in the last ten years than the number of goals they scored last season. However, it was doom spelt all along for the Black Cats last season and after finishing rock bottom, they moved down to the Championship.
Things have not gone well for the Black Cats well this season either. Sunderland has just won five of their 28 league matches this season and with only 25 points on the board, they stand in the relegation zone. The club is 22nd in the Championship and looks set to drop further. After failing to guide an aimless Sunderland side to safety last season, Moyes resigned as the manager of the club in May this year. Simon Grayson who replaced the Scot got the sack after only eighteen games in charge with Chris Coleman now in charge.
It is now being reported that Sunderland is now seeking to build on their numbers by bringing in Bournemouth midfielder Emerson Hyndman on loan till the end of the season. They have already wrapped up a deal for Jake Clarke-Salter on loan from Chelsea and the 21-year-old central midfielder, who had a successful spell at Rangers last season by winning the young player award in the club, could be Sunderland’s latest addition. His return to Bournemouth has seen him spend most of his time on the bench with the USA international making only 3 appearances for the Cherries.
Sunderland will have to fight off Rangers for the player’s signature who is also interested in bringing in the player. Bournemouth appears to be undecided on the player’s future after Eddie Howe told the Bournemouth Daily Echo: “That’s something we will look at towards the end of the window. I wouldn’t close it off and say no but I wouldn’t say yes, either.
“We will make a decision taking into account the state of our squad at that time. “I think Emerson did really well against Wigan here and did very well when he came on the other day. I’d love to give him more opportunities but that is difficult as the position he plays is one of our strongest in terms of numbers.
“I’m very pleased with the way he’s attacked the season and how well he has done behind the scenes, so we will make the right decision for Emerson.”
Getting a player like Emerson would certainly help Sunderland add some new energy to the team but Coleman’s team should be prioritizing bolstering the backline first to stabilize the team.
