Leicester City’s fairytale grasped the attention of the entire world in the 2015-16 season. From being threatened by relegation in the 2014-15 season, Claudio Ranieri’s side went on to an incredible title win the next season as the world stood to watch in amazement.
Winning the Premier League changed the club overnight. They had become one of the English sides to represent Europe, they were linked with big-name signings and most importantly they were being referred to as defending champions. As several big names began to make their way to the club, Leicester grew in stature.
As Ranieri made way for Craig Shakespeare, the influx of new players continued with the club optimistic of another strong season in England’s top flight. Shakespeare who took charge of the club last season after title-winning manager Claudio Ranieri was sacked unceremoniously in February, led the foxes to a twelfth place finish last season. He oversaw the arrival of a bunch of new players to the club including exciting talents like Kelechi Iheanacho and Aleksandar Dragovic, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen.
Shakespeare is now long gone and the foxes are enjoying a decent run of form under new boss Claude Puel. They have kept four consecutive clean sheets and Dragovic has played in all the games, drawing praise from the manager who wants him to maintain his strong form so that he can make the loan deal permanent.
“We will see,” he said.
“At the moment he is on loan, we will see at the end of the season if he stays with us or not.
“It is important for him and all the players to continue his hard work in training and in games, and show their quality.
“It is competition between players because we have a good squad and we will see at the end.”
Dragovic has had to endure a tough time on the bench but made his opportunity count even though his first chance came at an unfamiliar right back position.
“For Dragovic, it was a difficult game for him at full-back,” said Puel.
“It was the first time for him he played there but we didn’t have another solution with Amartey suspended and Simpson injured.
“It was not his best position but there was no other solution. He played well in the last game at centre back with strength in the duals, with good concentration and focus. He gives a good response in this position.
With Dragovic’s form on the rise, Puel will want to keep a hold of the 26-year old to help Leicester in the coming seasons as well.
