Stoke City are looking to secure the services of Borussia Dortmund winger Andre Schurrle on a loan deal this month. According to recent reports in the English press, the Potters are ready to pounce on the former Chelsea attacker’s signature with their new manager Paul Lambert already going back to Germany for his first signing of this winter transfer window in the form of full-back Kostas Stafylidis joining Stoke on loan from Bundesliga club Augsburg. Some sources are now claiming that Lambert is willing to go back to his former club Borussia Dortmund in pursuit of Schurrle’s signature.
The German World Cup winner has found game time limited in the Bundesliga club this season and is reportedly available on a loan deal, possibly for 18 months as Dortmund try to cut down on their wage bill by offloading his reported £150,000-a-week wages. It is believed that Stoke City and Newcastle United are two possible destinations for the 27-year-old forward during this transfer window.
The Potters have already signed right-back Moritz Bauer from Rubin Kazan and are expected to secure the signature of winger Jack Harrison from New York City in the coming days.
Schurrle joined Borussia Dortmund from Vfl Wolfsburg for a fee in the region of £25m in the summer of 2016. He has also previously won the Premier League with Chelsea back in 2015. The German international has found life hard at the Westfalenstadion in this campaign and has only made 10 appearances for the Bundesliga club in all competitions. Although, he is yet to score a goal so far but has been able to provide two assists in the Bundesliga this term.
The potential addition of the 27-year-old midfielder will undoubtedly be a major coup for the Potters if Paul Lambert manages to bring him to the bet365 stadium. Stoke City are currently in 17th place in the Premier League standings, just a point above the relegation zone. Lambert ensured a 2-0 win for his side at home against Huddersfield Town in his first league game in charge of the Potters. However, the Staffordshire club are still in danger of getting relegated at the end of the season and could use some quality reinforcements in this January transfer window. A player of the calibre of Schurrle might do enough to keep them in the Premier League this season.
It remains to be seen whether they are successful in their efforts to sign the German international on a loan deal this month.
