As per one of the latest reports by Goal, Celtic are perceived to be interested to sign Borussia Dortmund’s out-of-favour defender, Neven Subotic. Subotic was also linked with a move to Huddersfield Town but the Terriers’ manager, David Wagner, dismissed such claims. However, the Celts have to battle Saint-Etienne to make Subotic sign on the dotted line.
Celtic have been able to engineer domestic superiority once again as they are placed at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, with 51 points to their name from 42 games. However, one of the major headaches that Brendan Rodgers’ side have faced this season is the lack of the requisite number of fit defenders as time and again, injuries haunted his backline.
Rodgers has already signed Marvin Compper and Lewis Morgan in the January transfer market, but it is their apparent interest to sign Subotic that has sent ripples in the market. The former Serbian international has won two Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund and has truckloads of experience under his belt, including his know-how of the Champions League.
However, he has been overlooked at his current club and has hardly been getting the adequate amount of chances to ply his trade on the pitch. He has fallen further behind in the pecking order after the arrival of Manuel Akanji from FC Basel earlier this month. Subotic has made merely 3 starts in the German top flight this season, and thus, it seems that his days at the Westfalenstadion are severely numbered.
The 29-year-old must be desperate to get regular game time under his belt and a move to the Celtic Park shouldn’t be a bad one for him. Celtic are indeed a big club who are desperate to make an impact in the Champions League and if they manage to sign Subotic they are expected to be aided in their endeavours massively in the upcoming season. Besides, the central defender is a proven player and winner as well.
Subotic is a calm figure at the back, makes shrewd tackles and interceptions and reads the game well. He has bailed Dortmund out of danger innumerable times and has always been a threat to the defence of the opposition during the set-pieces. He might not be the player he was three or four years back but he is still a renowned figure amidst the football fraternity and the quality of the ranks of the Glasgow-giants would increase manifold if the secure his signature.
