Reports have emerged that Manchester United have shifted their sights on Leicester City forward, Jamie Vardy now that the Alexis Sanchez transfer has been confirmed with the Chilean heading over to Manchester for his medical.
But what can the veteran Englishman provide really? Romelu Lukaku arrived in summer with a £75m price tag and now that Sanchez is due to arrive as well in the coming weeks, is it not mandatory for Anthony Martial to shift into the cover number nine role?
This is a very peculiar trade rumour even for a powerhouse like Manchester United who have already spent over £132m this season and are yet to sign a left-back. It has been no secret that Jose Mourinho’s most problematic position in the current campaign has been the left-back role and even though Ashley Young has filled in as a makeshift option, a well proven defensive addition is necessary. The Champions League is due to start from the next month and the Portuguese tactician will have to set up his squad beforehand if he really wants to overtake the other European giants and close in the gap behind Manchester City.
Vardy’s name spread around England like wildfire during Leicester City’s title-winning 2015/16 campaign as the 31-year-old went on to awe fans from every corner of the world with his incredible displays in the Premier League. An incredible eye for goal paired with a ridiculous work ethic makes him one of the best and most lethal number nines in the English game.
An experienced talisman who has lead the Foxes from the front is on the wishlist of many managers including Arsene Wenger who tried to sign him after the 2015/16 season. Vardy is also expected to pair up with Harry Kane in the England squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and even though he has refused a move to Arsenal in the past, a move to big times cannot be ruled out completely.
Lukaku has struggled to continue his incredible goalscoring run from the early stages of the season and suffered a significant goal drought recently. Even though he has started to chip in, fans at Old Trafford can agree that a backup striker is necessary.
Anthony Martial has been in prolific form for the Red Devils, having scored three and assisted one in the last 3 league outings. He started off his career as a lone striker under Louis Van Gaal but have been shifted to the left wing by Mourinho. Maybe he and Marcus Rashford will have to rotate for starts from the right if Vardy makes the move to United.
