Burnley have agreed to a deal to sign Everton winger Aaron Lennon for an undisclosed fee. The 30-year-old speedster has been surplus to requirements at Goodison Park following the arrival of Theo Walcott earlier this month. According to multiple sources in the English press, Lennon is set to have a medical with the Clarets after already agreeing on personal terms with the club. The former England international joined the Toffees from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2015 and has gone on to score 7 goals in 63 appearances for the Merseyside club.
Lennon has just managed to feature in 19 matches for Everton this season and is yet to score so far. Although, he has two assists to his name in all competitions. His football career in 2017 was mainly disrupted due to his detainment by police in May under the guidelines of the Mental Health Act over concerns for his welfare. In an interview after reporting for pre-season training back in July last year, the 30-year-old winger said that he had received “incredible” support from “Everton, Spurs, their fans, football fans and concerned members of the general public”.
Burnley has recently struggled in the Premier League after making an incredible start to the season under manager Sean Dyche. Their failure to pick up points regularly during the festive period has underlined the need to bring in reinforcements in the ongoing January transfer window. The Clarets could do with a few new faces this month which would bolster Sean Dyche’s squad going into the second half of the season. The addition of Lennon will definitely boost his attacking options ahead of Saturday’s crunch Premier League clash versus Manchester United at the Turf Moor.
The Clarets currently find themselves in 7th place in the Premier League table, three points ahead of Leicester City, who occupies the 8th spot while five points behind Arsenal, who are in 6th place. Given how bad the Gunners are playing right now, Sean Dyche’s men are in with a chance of breaking into the top 6, especially after the arrival of Lennon who has the potential to add some goals and creativity to their team going forward.
The former Spurs winger has bags of pace and usually operates on the right flank. He has a wealth of experience in the Premier League which has seen him feature in 342 matches, scoring 33 goals and providing 58 assists during his time with Tottenham Hotspur and Everton. He has a knack for scoring and creating goals which are exactly what’s required in this Burnley team right now.
Only time will tell whether Lennon will be a hit at Turf Moor or if he turns out to be a bust.
