Everton are being heavily backed to sign Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy. According to a report in the English press, the Toffees are currently the favourites to sign the Foxes striker and could be another potential addition to Sam Allardyce’s frontline following the arrival of Cenk Tosun from Besiktas and Theo Walcott from Arsenal in recent weeks. It was expected that Big Sam would look to splash the cash in this January transfer window to bolster his attacking options and if the bookies are correct, then Everton won’t stop with the acquisitions of Tosun and Walcott.
The 31-year-old England international has been heavily touted to make a move to the blue half of Merseyside in January and Oddschecker have recently revealed that the former Fleetwood Town frontman has attracted 34% of all bets in his ‘Next club before January 31 market, with the Toffees touted as clear favourites to land his signature. Vardy was priced at 16/1 just a few weeks ago to join the Merseyside club and the market has since moved in favour of Everton with the club now favourites to secure the services of the player at 10/1.
Manchester United were being linked (16/1) with the former non-league player earlier this month but the bookies are now claiming that he is more likely to join Sam Allardyce’s side over the Red Devils before the end of this ongoing winter transfer window. Arsenal and Atletico Madrid have emerged as outside shouts for his signature at 20/1 and 33/1 respectively.
A representative of Oddschecker recently made a statement on the market involving Vardy’s next destination and was quoted to have said,
“Big Sam didn’t last long as England manager, but maybe we are getting a taste of what his Three Lions team would have looked like.
“Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott and Jamie Vardy could well have been an England front-line in recent years but, if Allardyce gets his way, they could be lining up together at Goodison Park soon.”
The director of Everton, Steve Walsh who is a good friend of manager Sam Allardyce knows the English forward well from his time at the King Power Stadium. However, any possible move seems highly unlikely in this transfer window with the Toffees already having enough options on the attacking third. The priority for Everton remains to recruit a suitable left-back and address that position before the end of the month. Although, the potential addition of Vardy could help them in their quest to bridge the gap between themselves and the top 6 of the Premier League in the near future.
The 31-year-old striker has scored 10 goals and provided one assist in 21 games for Leicester this season. It remains to be seen whether the bookies are correct or if it’s just a market shift based on hope over substance.
