Wolverhampton Wanderers travelled to Wales to take on Premier League strugglers Swansea City as part of an FA Cup third round replay at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday night. The Wolves are currently leading the English Championship table by 10 points and were looking to bring some of their good league form into the FA Cup. Nuno Espírito Santo made a lot of changes to his lineup and it backfired as they conceded a goal early in the match when Jordan Ayew scored in the 11th minute.
The visitors came back into the match courtesy of a Diogo Jota goal in the 66th minute. However, the Swans responded almost immediately through Wilfried Bony to seal the contest in their favour and progress to the next round of the competition.
Let’s take a look at how each Wolves player fared on the night.
GK: Will Norris – 5/10
He made a few good saves to keep his side in the contest but was involved in quite a few mix-ups during the match. The Wolves keeper conceded two goals on the night which led to his team’s elimination from the competition.
CB: Roderick Miranda – 6/10
He put in a few good challenges in the Wolves defence and tried to keep Jordan Ayew quiet. However, the Ghanaian scored early which made his life tough in Nuno Espírito Santo’s backline.
CB: Danny Batth – 6/10
The defender was aerially dominant and made some crucial clearances to keep his side in the contest.
CB: Kortney Hause – 5/10
He was let down by a poor pass from his goalkeeper in the first half and also slipped on one occasion early on which almost let Ayew in on goal. Not the best game from the Wolves defender.
RM: Matt Doherty – 6/10
He put in a tireless shift on the right flank and linked up well with his teammates. However, his crossing failed to find its mark at times.
CM: Morgan Gibbs-White – 6/10
He was left open a few times but couldn’t convert for his team in the attacking third. Although, he did well to make some good runs into the opposition box during the course of the match.
CM: Alfred N’Diaye – 6/10
He got booked for a mistimed challenge on Leroy Fer in the first half. He was mediocre in midfield and failed to provide a creative spark going forward.
LM: Barry Douglas – 6/10
He was ever present on the ball when the Wolves looked to attack in the Swansea half. His free kicks from dead ball situations mostly flattered to deceive during the course of the match.
RW: Wander Helder Costa – 7/10
He was influential for the Wolves in the attacking third but ran out of gas as the match went on. He was rightfully subbed for the last quarter of the game.
ST: Rafael Mir Vicente – 5/10
He failed to hold on to the ball in the first half and was guilty of losing possession for his team. Although, he did well to link up with his teammates at times.
LW: Bright Enobakhare – 5/10
He looked a threat in the first half but also, gave away the ball cheaply in certain situations. He was rightfully subbed for the dangerous Jota in the second half.
Substitutes:
ST: Diogo Jota – 8/10
The Portuguese came off the bench and looked a threat from the get-go. He scored the equaliser for his team and could have scored a few more.
ST: Lohner Leo Bonatini – 7/10
He was a threat after being subbed on and linked up well in the opposition box.
CM: Romain Saiss – 5/10
He came on to provide some fresh legs in midfield but failed to make an impact. He got carded in the dying embers of the game while venting his frustration.
