Liverpool are in talks to sign Barcelona defender Aleix Vidal. According to recent reports in the Spanish media, the Reds are among a whole host of clubs looking to secure the services of the Spaniard. Some sources are claiming that the Merseyside club are in talks with Vidal’s agent over a potential transfer to Anfield. It is also believed that the player’s agent has met with representatives from the Manchester clubs over a possibility of a transfer to take place before the end of this month.
Some reports have stated that Vidal wants to leave the Spanish club in the ongoing transfer window in search of regular first-team football. He has only made seven starts for the Catalans in all competitions this term and could be frustrated with the lack of first-team opportunities.
Apparently, the defender is running out of patience with the scarcity of domestic opportunities and might be looking to sign for a club abroad in an attempt to leave the Nou Camp in January.
Liverpool does not require a wing-back but could definitely make use of his versatility as Vidal can operate on a number of different positions on either flank. Vidal joined Barcelona on a £15m move from Sevilla in the summer of 2015 and has gone on to make 41 appearances for the club, scoring 4 goals and providing 11 assists.
The Reds are currently in 3rd place in the Premier League standings after their remarkable 4-3 victory against league leaders Manchester City at Anfield in their last outing. Jurgen Klopp’s side put an end to City’s domestic unbeaten streak which will give the Reds immense confidence in their quest to secure a top 4 finish this season.
A potential move for Vidal will definitely bolster their attacking options but the Merseysiders are already covered in their full-back positions with Alberto Moreno and Andrew Robertson performing well at left-back while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez doing a brilliant job on the right side of the defence. They will be boosted with Nathaniel Clyne’s possible return from injury next month so Liverpool does not actually need someone like Vidal and it might just be paper talk in the Spanish media.
The Spaniard has featured in 15 matches for Barcelona this season and has scored 2 goals and made 3 assists in all competitions so far. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the Spaniard and if he does end up playing football in the Premier League.
