Swansea City may be struggling to make any progress in the domestic league but the FA Cup gives the manager a chance to impress the fans and the hierarchy. They were drawn against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Championship table toppers in the 3rd round of the knockout cup competition and managed to hold on to a 0-0 draw, to bring them back to the Liberty Stadium for a replay.
The Wolves stand favourites for promotion this season and were expected to get the better of the Swans at the Molineux Stadium last week. However, Swansea now have a great chance of beating them in the replay this week and play their strongest XI. Here is the predicted lineup Carlos Carvalhal might field for this tie:
Team News:
Carvalhal has a few stars coming back into action in this tie. The likes of Tammy Abraham and Mike van der Hoon are all back in training and could play a role in this game. Angel Rangel and Renato Sanches however, remains the only absentees for the Swans. Midfielder Leroy Fer, who saw red in the reverse fixture, is however available after the card was overturned, along with Kyle Naughton, who is also back from suspension.
Expected lineup (3-4-3):
Defense:
Kristoffer Nordfeldt was preferred over Lukasz Fabianski in the game earlier in the month against Wolves and could keep his place under the bar, for this tie as well. The manager used a 3-4-3 system in that game and might stick it, using Van der Hoorn, who is back from an injury, on the right side of the backline.
Kyle Bartley was used on the left side of the defence in that tie but might be replaced with Alfie Mawson, who had a decent outing against the Magpies, at the weekend. Federico Fernandez, who was withdrawn for an attacker in that tie, will keep his place at the heart of the backline.
Midfield:
With Leroy Fer back in action, he is expected to start in the midfield yet again and could be partnered by Nathan Dyer, who is a crucial player in the midfield for the Swans. The versatile Martin Olsson is expected to keep his place on the left flank as a wing-back while young Connor Roberts did no harm to his starting role in the FA Cup for the Swans.
Attack:
Tammy Abraham is also back in action but might not be pushed into the first team with Swansea sticking with Wilfried Bony to lead the attack. He should be partnered by Wayne Routledge on the left flank and Ki Sung-Yeung on the right flank, to add some quality and pace to their attack.
Here is how they might line up:
