Manchester United and Liverpool are two of the most decorated clubs in English football and when it comes to transfers, there has always been players, who snubbed one of them for the other. Last notable player that rejected Liverpool for Manchester United was Dutch international Memphis Depay but USA international Christian Pulisic might now be able to avenge that for the Reds.
The Red Devils are in desperate need of pace in the attack, which was demonstrated by Jesse Lingard in December. Liverpool need to replace Philippe Coutinho’s creativity as soon as possible and for both teams, the Borussia Dortmund man fits the bill. At just 19, he is a superstar in the making and both Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp believe that they can help him on his way.
So it does not come as a surprise that both teams have extensively been linked with a move for Pulisic in recent games. He may not be leaving Borussia Dortmund this month but reports suggest that Liverpool and Manchester United want to tie him down to a deal this month, that will see him move to England in the summer. But which team is a better fit for the teenage sensation from the other side of the Atlantic?
Manchester United are one of the biggest brands in the world and representing them on the field is one of the biggest dreams for many footballers. They are the most decorated team in England and Pulisic will be assured of trophies at Old Trafford. However, the only team that comes close to the Red Devils, at least in terms of success on the field is Liverpool.
More so under their current manager Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds have managed to lure the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita, all of who were wanted by the biggest clubs in Europe. They are currently in probably the best state in the last few years and are sure to compete at the highest level, for years to come.
Both teams are equally attractive for Pulisic and might come down to where he will fit in better. If that is the case, the Anfield outfit edge Manchester United pretty easily. Klopp’s ‘heavy-metal’ football is where Pulisic is at his best.
Precise in counter attacks and as quick as anyone over the turf, Pulisic is devastating when afforded any kind of space and playing under Klopp will get the best out of him.
Jose Mourinho needs wingers but it is hard to see the 19-year old walk into the first team at Old Trafford. It is impossible to see the Portuguese build a team around him, to help him excel. The manager’s pragmatic approach to the game also does not fit into Pulisic’s style of playmaking Liverpool a better choice for the youngster.
