Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move for Norwich City midfielder James Maddison. According to latest reports, the ex Aberdeen loan star is being monitored by Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs and could be in line to make a move to the Premier League in the summer. The Coventry born midfielder who has spent six months of the last campaign on loan at Aberdeen is wanted by the North Londoners as well as their rivals, Liverpool. It is believed that the Premier League duo will go head to head in pursuit of the player’s signature next summer.
The 21-year-old put in some impressive displays during his time at the Pittodrie Stadium and scored a famous winner against Rangers when he smashed in a last-gasp goal to bag all three points for his side.
Maddison has also been in excellent form for Norwich City in the English Championship. He has scored 7 goals and made 8 assists in 28 matches for the Canaries in all competitions this season. Some sources are claiming that he is set to stay at Carrow Road beyond this month ahead of a possible move in the summer. Norwich will instead opt to cash in on his fellow colleague Alex Pritchard in what is reported to be a £11million deal with Premier League’s Huddersfield Town.
Maddison’s incredible performances this season has helped his side climb to 13th place in the English Championship standings, 13 points above the relegation zone. Although they might not have enough in the tank to qualify for the playoffs, the Canaries are still having a strong season in the second tier of English football. The potential loss of someone of Maddison’s quality could prove to be detrimental to their chances of a promotion push for next season. However, the money generated from a potential big money transfer of the Coventry born midfielder could help them strengthen in other areas of the squad.
Tottenham Hotspur are looking to build for the future and are currently occupying 5th place in the Premier League standings, just three points behind Liverpool who are occupying the final Champions League position in the top 4. With Mousa Dembele set to depart the club soon, they will require a young midfielder who can line up in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting eleven for years to come. The acquisition of Maddison could turn out a shrewd signing but it remains to be seen if they can fend off stiff competition from the Reds of Merseyside.
Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of the 21-year-old England international.
