The race for promotion to the Promised Land of the Premier League is getting spicier with every passing week in the Championship. A lot of clubs have imposed themselves as contenders for uplift and Middlesbrough happen to be one among them. The Smoggies are placed at the 8th spot in the league table with 41 points to their name after 26 games.
The ongoing January transfer window would be crucial for them and a substantial part of their final productivity would depend upon the number of quality players they manage to sign this month. Tony Pulis, the new manager of Middlesbrough must be desirous to prove a point as well and as per one of the latest reports, Middlesbrough have put Ghanaian international, Edwin Gyasi, on their radar.
Gyasi is a versatile commodity who has the potential to operate effectively and efficiently from a wide range of slots. He can operate from either wing, from either side of the midfield as well as a striker. He emerged through the youth ranks of AZ and currently plies his trade with Norwegian outfit, Aalesunds. The 26-year-old has previously played for clubs like FC Twente and Roda JK Kerkrade.
The Ghanaian has been quite decent in the league so far this season, having smashed 6 goals and has also registered 3 assists in 27 appearances so far. Aalesunds have slapped a price tag of around £600,000 on Gyasi, and it would not be easy for the Riversiders to secure his signature as West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland are also in the race to make him sign on the dotted line.
However, it is perceived that Pulis’ side are in the pole position to sign him and given that he is someone who can score as well as create ample amount of goal scoring opportunities, he could be an astute signing. He dribbles well, has the requisite pace in his legs to gallop past opposition’s defence and would be a breath of fresh air if Middlesbrough can lure him to the Riverside Stadium.
However, one of the aspects which the club would definitely ponder upon is his lack of experience of English football. Besides, he isn’t a great contributor to the defensive needs of his employers and doesn’t show a great deal of dominance in the air. Nonetheless, Pulis needs some additions this month and owing to their apparent interest in Gyasi, it would be intriguing to see where the speculation goes from here.
