Tottenham Hotspur has suffered a major setback in pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Jannik Vestergaard. According to latest reports, the Bundesliga club’s sporting director Max Eberl has stated that there is no reason for the German club to part ways with their prized asset. In an interview with German newspaper Bild, Eberi said, “There is absolutely no reason for us to let Jannik go.”
The Bundesliga defender was gathering interest from both north London clubs in this January transfer window after a string of impressive displays in this campaign. Tottenham Hotspur was set to battle it out with Arsenal for his signature but it seemingly won’t take place this month. The Danish international has featured in 19 matches for his current club this season and has scored 3 goals so far.
With Vestergaard set to stay with Borussia Monchengladbach, let’s take a look at three alternatives for Mauricio Pochettino to consider.
John Anthony Brooks
The American has featured in 8 matches for Vfl Wolfsburg this season since his move in the summer from Hertha BSC. He is a left-footed centre-back who can dominate aerially with his commanding presence in defence. Brooks has earned 32 international caps for his country and has scored 3 goals at the international level. However, he has failed to feature regularly for the Bundesliga club and Spurs might be able to take advantage of the situation by bringing him in North London.
Eliaquim Mangala
The Manchester City outcast has struggled to feature regularly in Pep Guardiola’s starting eleven at the Etihad Stadium. Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs can provide him with an escape route by putting in an offer for the French defender. The 26-year-old has played in 15 matches for the Citizens in all competitions this season. Mangala has failed to impress since his move from FC Porto where he made a name for himself at the heart of the club’s defence. Pochettino might be the ideal manager to get the best out of him at Spurs if they are to make a move for him in the near future.
Jemerson
The Brazilian centre-back has put in some eye-catching performances for AS Monaco this season. He has featured in 27 matches for the Ligue 1 outfit in all competitions and has scored 2 goals so far. At 25, the Brazilian defender still has his peak years ahead of him which Spurs might look to benefit from. Jemerson has earned an international cap for the Brazil national side and a potential move to the Premier League will definitely suit his playing style going into the future.
