A ludicrous rumour has emerged that Hull City veteran goalkeeper, Allan McGregor is bound to end up with Chelsea in the coming weeks. The 35-year-old is the first choice under Nigel Adkins to appear in between the sticks this season and move away from the Tigers seems highly unlikely.
Chelsea already possesses goalkeeping depth from Willy Caballero and Portuguese international, Eduardo. Caballero is the second choice with Eduardo making just one appearance this season.
The fans at Stamford Bridge received a huge boost ahead of their FA Cup third round draw against Norwich City through the positive statements released by Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian shot stopper’s £100,000 contract is set to end in another 18 months with talks of an extension circulating around the club ranks.
When asked about his contract situation, the 25-year-old said that he is currently happy at the club and a deal is currently being prepared. Still too young to hit your prime, Courtois believes that he can do so while playing for the Blues in the future. “Do Eden and I encourage each other to sign? Yes. He will say ‘if you sign, I will sign’ and I say the same to him! I think we are both happy at Chelsea, we both have a good part to play. We have been champions twice in the four seasons I have been here and can have our peak years together at Chelsea.”
How the arrival of McGregor right now would benefit the Blues is still obscure for club fans and officials. This makes the entire McGregor speculation highly improbable until and unless a lucrative deal is in the conversation. A £40,000 wage bill is a very attractive offer for a player in the late stages of his career.
However, with Eduardo’s contract set to end after this season, maybe the Chelsea management is eager to rinse off any future headache over a third goalkeeper. McGregor is well accustomed to the pace of English football after arriving from the Turkish side, Besiktas in 2013.
The Edinburgh-born shot-stopper has been capped at international level for Scotland but is now below the pecking order behind the likes of Craig Gordon and David Marshall.
Chelsea are in the third spot of the Premier League with a plethora of young players out on loan including 24-year-old Jamal Blackman. Even his contract with the North London side runs out after this season and might get renewed until and unless he plans on staying at Sheffield.
