Manchester United have joined in the race along with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, to sign highly-rated Serie A midfielder, Lorenzo Pellegrini. The AS Roma youngster spent the last couple of season with Sassuolo and is a key part of the squad under Eusebio Di Francesco.
His contract with La Magica is set to run until the summer of 2022 and has a release clause of £21m. Judging by his recent exploits and his impressive 11 goals showing for Sassuolo in 54 appearances, this is a bargain price to pay by a stacked English side.
Pellegrini is the perfect balance of creativity and defensive perseverance and is one of the hottest European talents right now. He is a graduate of the Roma academy and earned his name by setting the league on fire while playing for the Black and Greens.
Roma could not resist calling back their prized wonderboy and signed him right back for £9m before the start of this season.
His scored the only goal for Roma’s 1-1 draw against Sassuolo in their last fixture of the year and have been consistent throughout the season.
Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho has fallen short of the quality of the ‘Noisy Neighbours’ this season and have dropped 15 points behind them in the league. The Portuguese tactician has been crying out for more quality signings to current United squad and has been provided with a war chest ahead of the January transfer window.
However, with the signing of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba to the side over the past year and a half, is Pellegrino really an ideal target for him?
It is no secret that Mourinho is primarily interested in signing a left-back and a winger as soon as possible. The transfer deal with Inter Milan over their Croatian wide man, Ivan Perisic fell through in the summer and Ashley Young had to be chosen as a makeshift full-back from the left.
Matic is no longer his former self and has fallen way below his own standards. He is no longer the midfield dominating anchor that can stabilise the team consistently throughout the season. Ander Herrera has become a sporadic player under Mourinho with Juan Mata mostly featuring from the right wing.
A restructuring of the midfield can do wonders for the Red Devils going forward. Pellegrino’s ability to link up the entire team can help the side in their European and domestic cup campaigns having progressed to the next rounds.
