The biggest advantage of being a premier club in Europe is far more than just being popular. In today’s modern-day version of football, the game has been commercialized to an extreme end and money has taken centre stage. In such a scenario, it is the clubs with deep wallets who get to call the shots while footballing values like loyalties have taken a backseat.
The biggest example of this case is the situation in Real Madrid. When Florentino Perez took over the reins at Real Madrid for the first time, he brought into the club a new era, the rule of the ‘Galacticos’. He brought in stars from all over the world and it resulted in magnifying the image of a club that was already amongst the top. It became evident over the decade or so that once Real Madrid set their eyes on a player, he was more or less gone within a year. Even Sir Alex Ferguson could not stop Cristiano Ronaldo from making the switch; such is the pulling power of the club based in the Spanish capital.
Thus the news that broke out recently regarding Rafa Mir has set a new order in the light. Valencia starlet Rafa Mir, who has been playing for the team’s reserve side this season, has scored 15 goals in 19 games this season. His hot form attracted attention from none other than Real Madrid and one other club.
It seems that Madrid has been outdone by Midlanders club Wolverhampton Wanderers who has agreed to a fee of £1.5 million with the Spanish club Valencia. The win of the signature for the 20-year-old sends out a message to many clubs as Wolves have a set a new pattern in motion by beating Madrid to the race.
As for Wolverhampton Wanderer’s form this season, with Derby County failing to secure a win, Wolverhampton Wanderers had the opportunity to secure an even bigger lead at the top and they did exactly that. The league leaders turned on the style against Brentford with them scoring three goals to see off their opponents 3-0.
Wolverhampton Wanderers now have secured 61 points from their 26 matches and more importantly, they have opened up a monstrous 12 point lead at the top with the second placed team Derby County standing on 49 points.
The magnitude of the lead can be understood when it is noted that the difference between Wolves and Derby is more than the difference between Derby and 10th placed Fulham, who are 10 points behind the Rams.
All in all, it is a happy start to the New Year for the Wolverhampton Wanderers as they will look to their new signing to settle into the team quickly.
