As per one of the latest reports by the Scotsman, Norwich City’s captain, Russell Martin, is keen to make a move to Rangers this month in order to enhance his chances of getting regular game time under his belt. Martin has really fallen out of favour with the Canaries this season, having played merely 5 Championship games and has not appeared for the club since their 4-0 defeat at the hands of Millwall at the end of August.
Rangers are currently undergoing a sporadic run of form under the tutelage of Graeme Murty. Apparently, the Gers are placed at the 3rd spot in the Scottish Premiership table with 40 points from 22 games. With their last outing ending in a goalless stalemate against their arch-rivals, Celtic, a bit of confidence was restored but given the competition, that Aberdeen are likely to offer in the second half of the season for the 2nd spot, Murty’s side would need to pan out more productive results.
Martin is perceived to be in good terms with Murty and it has also been reported by The Daily Record that the Norwich defender is on the list of targets made by Murty and director of football, Mark Allen. The 31-year-old still has some years of competitive football left in him and a move to the Ibrox Stadium might be a decent one for all the parties involved. Martin is a player who has truckloads of experience under his belt and is a proven figure.
Having emerged through the youth ranks of Brighton & Hove Albion, Martin played for the senior side of Wycombe Wanderers, Peterborough United and after a brief loan spell with Norwich City, he made a permanent move to the Carrow Road. The Light Blues do have a veteran centre-back in the shape of Bruno Alves, but the Portuguese injured himself whilst plying his trade against Brendan Rodgers’ side last weekend and might be out for a considerable period of time.
In order to keep a decent squad, Murty must act in the ongoing transfer window and it would make a lot of sense if they lure Martin to their ranks. He is strong, reads the game well and is capable enough to play as a left-back as well.
His addition will be a notable one and although it may be argued that the Scottish international lacks experience of Scottish Premiership, he has the pedigree to adjust to the same.
