Huddersfield Town has signed AS Monaco defender Terence Kongolo on loan until the end of the season. It has been confirmed by Sky Sports that a deal has taken place with the Dutch defender putting pen to paper on a temporary deal with the Terriers until the end of the current campaign. The 23-year-old ex Feyenoord centre-back has become Huddersfield’s first signing of the January transfer window.
Kongolo broke through the youth ranks at Dutch club Feyenoord which earned him a call-up to the Netherlands national team. He has earned 3 international caps for his nation so far. He recently signed for the Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco on a five-year deal last summer. Following his acquisition, the Terriers boss David Wagner was quoted to have said:
“Terence is a top player who we’ve followed from his time at Feyenoord. His big summer move to Monaco put him out of our reach at the time, but we’re delighted we can bring him in on loan now.
“He is a high-quality young centre-back and will provide us with a great option for the rest of the Premier League season. With Michael Hefele and Jon Gorenc Stanković returning from long-term injuries, it was important to have this.
“Terence has qualities that will really suit our style of play. He’s athletic and mobile and he plays on the front foot in the way he defends and uses the ball. I’m excited to work with him during the course of the season.”
Huddersfield Town suffered a new year’s day defeat at the hands of Leicester City with a 3-0 scoreline and manager Wagner was not happy with his club’s defensive showing on the day. That defeat has left the Terriers winless in their last four league matches. However, they still find themselves in 11th place in the Premier League table with a tally of 24 points in 22 league outings but more importantly, they are still four points above the relegation zone. The Yorkshire club has also conceded 35 goals in 22 league matches which is one of the main reasons why they are still not out of danger and might get themselves involved in a relegation dogfight.
Kongolo has appeared in 6 matches for AS Monaco this season and come into the Yorkshire club having tasted Champions League football with the reigning Ligue 1 champions in this campaign. He will definitely help the Terriers improve defensively in their quest to finish in the top half of the Premier League standings.
Only time will tell whether his time with Huddersfield Town is a success or if it turns out to be a bust!
