Middlesbrough are in negotiations to sign the Ghanaian winger Edwin Gyasi from Norwegian club Aelsunds. According to a recent report in the English press, both Middlesbrough and Sunderland are in talks to secure the services of the 26-year-old. Gyasi is also reportedly driving interest from the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion monitoring his progress in the Norwegian league. It is believed that the Norwegian club will be willing to let the African winger leave for a fee in the region of £600,000 with add-ons.
Gyasi was born and brought up in the Netherlands under the guidance of his Ghanaian parents. In September last year, he made his international debut for Ghana in an important World Cup qualifier versus Congo and scored his first goal on the international stage in a 1-1 draw with Egypt in November 2017. The 26-year-old is highly versatile and can operate on the right flank or as a centre-forward.
At 6ft 1ins, he can be a threat aerially which can be an added asset to his potential suitors. He has scored six goals for his club Aelsunds this season and has caught the eyes of the Boro with his sparkling displays in the Norwegian league so far.
Middlesbrough are desperately trying to kickstart their campaign by bolstering their attacking options with the signing of the Ghana international. They are currently in 9th place in the Championship standings and are three points off sixth-placed Sheffield United who occupy the final playoff spot.
The Boro has scored 32 goals in 25 league matches which is simply not good enough in their quest to finish in the top 6 at the end of the season. New manager Tony Pulis is trying to turn their fortunes for the better and will be looking to recruit wisely in the transfer market with Gyasi amongst the options in his wishlist.
The Ghanian winger came through the youth ranks of Dutch club AZ Alkmaar and FC Twente before breaking out as one of the stars in Norwegian football for Aalesund. He definitely has the potential to light up the English Championship if the Boro is able to agree to a deal for the player. With a knack for scoring goals, the Aalesund player can be an ideal asset for Tony Pulis’s side at the Riverside Stadium and might turn out to be the missing piece that can help them finish in one of the playoff spots this term. It remains to be seen whether Middlesbrough are successful in their efforts to fend off strong interest from rivals Sunderland in pursuit of the winger.
