West Ham United manager, David Moyes is reportedly interested in signing Borussia Dortmund winger, Andre Schurrle. The newly appointed boss has stated that his team is unevenly balanced and is currently scouting for a midfielder to add in the upcoming transfer window.
Schurrle has fallen out of favour for the German outfit with just a measly 339 minutes of game time received so far into the season. Spending majority of the season on the sidelines with injury, the former Chelsea player has failed to find his feet at the Westfalenstadion and has fallen way below the pecking order.
Schurrle’s stint with the Blues ended in the summer of 2015 when the Ludwigshafen-born winger, moved to Wolfsburg for £24m. After an impressive 13 goals netted in 63 appearances, he moved to Dortmund for an undisclosed fee on 22 July 2016.
The FIFA World Cup 2018 is just six months away and is a significant part of the German’s career. Schurrle won the 2014 World Cup after assisting Mario Gotze to the only goal of the final against Argentina. However, he might not get selected under Joachim Low if he fails to display his talents on the pitch.
Dortmund have a spree of young talent in the form of Christian Pulisic, Alexander Isak and Maximilian Philipp. With Marco Reus and Mario Gotze nearing a return to the side, they might not be able to guarantee a starting spot for Schurrle for the remainder of the season.
West Ham United have dropped to the relegation zone after their controversial 3-3 draw against Bournemouth on Boxing Day. It looked like things were starting to turn around with the appointment of Moyes but the Hammers are yet to hit their stride this season.
The introduction of Schurrle into the side can be a crucial turning point ahead of the second half of the season. The former Manchester United manager has struggled to find options in the wide areas with the defensive fullbacks of Arthur Masuaku and Pablo Zabaleta delegated with those duties.
In the current lineup of Manuel Lanzini, Marko Arnautovic and Andrew Ayew, Schurrle can find a spot in the right wing position where he is capably suited. With a keen eye for goal, the 27-year-old made his name in the Bundesliga by cutting in from the left and terrorizing defences with his backdoor runs. However, he can make the adjustment to the other wing having a dominant right foot.
Schurrle is no slouch on the defensive end either and can help the Hammers escape relegation this season.
