It seems Everton are ready to buy more talent to save the club from the imminent danger looming over them. They have now been linked with Karl Toko Ekambi of Angers.
In a crazy transfer market, backed by the Everton board, ex-boss Ronald Koeman brought in an arsenal of summer signings that saw Everton spend a net amount of £142.38m.
Despite spending so heavily, they have failed to score regularly and it is now being reported that Karl Toko Ekambi who has a contract with the French side till 2020 will not come for cheap.
Everton will also have to fight off interest in the forward from fellow English teams like Burnley and Crystal Palace. Moreover, reports claim that Ekambi has already turned down a move to England with Brighton and Hove Albion being the club who failed to land him in the summer. The 25 year old is now in hot form and has given a return of nine goals in 18 outings for Angers this season.
As for Everton, tipped by many to challenge the ‘top six’, the Toffees were expected to fight for a European spot this time. Currently Everton are fighting a battle of rejuvenation after having been to hell and back in the early few months of the season. The club has in no way been of any challenge to the top six in the first round of the Premier League.
They had just collected a grand total of two points from their six big matches against Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, with the 1-1 draw at the Etihad and 0-0 draw against Liverpool the only two positive results. While the results itself were disappointing, it was the spineless nature of these defeats that have left the Everton fans fuming.
Everton shipped in 14 goals in their four matches against Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham. Add to this their embarrasing defeats against Burnley, Leicester City following up on their subpar displays in Europe, and Everton is a club who still has a lot of redemption to seek.
Their Thursday night outings in the Europa League were in sync with their disappointing domestic form with the Toffees claiming one win in six matches and ending their group stage second from bottom.
In a summer that promised so much with the return of their boyhood star Wayne Rooney, things have gone horribly wrong. The Everton squad hosts a team of players of great attacking caliber. The squad has a good mixture of youth and experience. In the likes of Rooney, Sigurosson, Barkley, Ramirez, Klaassen, Calvert-Lewin Everton have few of the brightest prospects of European football at the club but nobody apart from Calvert-Lewin has really fired this season for them which would make Ekambi a necessity buy.
