While Everton’s form has certainly improved under Sam Allardyce, one thing that has not is their goal scoring. Everton currently sit 9th in the Premier League table and are undefeated in seven league games. This is a remarkable turnaround for The Blues as they were at one point in the season possible relegation candidates.
However, this is no longer the case thanks to Allardyce coming in and steadying the ship. But despite the seven-game undefeated streak, Allardyce is still not happy and wants to improve his squad in January.
The Everton boss has already identified the area he feels needs to be improved the most. That area is the centre forward spot. This is quite understandable. Especially given Everton’s last two results. They drew 0-0 with Chelsea and 0-0 with West Brom. While the 0-0 to Chelsea could be seen as Everton just keeping it tight at the back and holding out for a draw, the West Brom game does raise some concerns.
West Brom are currently 19th in the league and have won just twice all season. Yet Everton, even though they are in good form, were not able to score a single goal past them. This further shows that Everton need to bring in some firepower up top if they are to challenger for a Europa League spot this season.
With this in mind, here are three potential strikers Everton could sign in January.
Cenk Tosun
Tosun is making this list for a number of reasons. But given that Everton are already being linked with him, it would be hard not to include him. However, it is easy to see why Everton would be interested in Tosun.
Tosun is currently playing in the Turkish first division for Besiktas. And he is having a fantastic season for them. So far in the league this season he has bagged an impressive eight goals and one assist in just 16 league games.
But Tosun’s record gets even more impressive when you look at his goals in all competitions. In all competitions, this season he has played 24 games, scored 14 goals and assisted three. This shows Tosun to be a very capable striker. He has also scored four goals in six Champions League games this season. Which shows that he can do it on the big stage. He is also rumoured to be costing around £25 million which in today’s overpriced market is pretty good for a consistent goal scorer.
Karl Toko Ekambi
Ekambi is a Cameroon striker who plays in the Ligue 1 for Angers. He is 25 years old and is having a solid season for the French side. He has played 18 games in total for them, all of which have been in the league and he has scored nine goals.
Given Angers could well be relegated, Ekambi could be a much cheaper option than Tosun who as already mentioned could cost £25 million.
Fran Sol
Sol is a 25-year-old Spanish striker who is currently playing in the Eredivisie for Willem II. Willem themselves are not having a great season. But much like Ekambi, Sol is carrying his side. Sol started out his career at Real Madrid. But he never made it into the first team. Despite this, Sol has proved to be a top striker for Willem this season.
So far this season Sol has played 16 league games for Willem and scored nine goals making his goal return actually better than Ekambi’s. He has also played three cup games this season for Willem and scored four goals. That puts his tally to 13 goals and three assists in 19 games this season for the Dutch side.
That is a superb return for a striker playing in one of Europe’s top leagues. The only problem Everton may have when they sign Sol and in fact, any of the above-mentioned strikers is that none of them has had Premier League experience. So, no matter who they sign, they will be gambling on if they can adapt to life in the Premier League.
