When Garry Monk shocked Leeds United at the end of last season by resigning from his job, it brought into the picture a certain Thomas Christiansen. Christiansen had guided Apoel Nicosia of Cyprus to the last 16 of the Europa League and to the Cypriot first division title last season before taking over at Leeds United.
When the Spaniard joined the club, the board was hoping to see the positive effect of having a foreign manager, in a manner somewhat similar to what David Wagner or Marco Silva has had at Huddersfield Town and Hull City.
Unlike the Leeds United board, Thomas Christiansen was welcomed with a touch of scepticism by the rest of the country, largely because he had not managed in such an intense league before and partially because the club fans still wanted Monk back. However, the Spaniard won over all their critics and fans with his sides’ new philosophy of football.
Leeds got off to a tremendous start to their new season. Fast flowing football that was easy on the eye and a defence that since the opening game at Bolton had conceded three goals in eight games meant that Leeds could not have hoped for a better start.
Things rarely go smoothly forever, especially if you are a manager in an English league. Christiansen saw his side lose form drastically and crash to three consecutive defeats. Such disastrous drop in form shocked everyone who thought Leeds United would make a charge for the title this season.
The Leeds machine began to show more signs of crack as the league progressed. However, the Whites appear to come back on track lately with four consecutive wins resulting in them now occupying the fifth spot in the Championship table.
Even though the situation at Elland Road is no longer gloomy, criticism and suggestions are still flying into the manager and the board’s office free of cost. New signings are being suggested and players are being asked to replace.
One such position where a new signing has been suggested is the position of a striker. Leeds United on loan striker Pierre-Michel Lasog ga has some fitness concerns to deal with and with their other striker Caleb Ekuban out injured, Leeds United may well be short on options.
Christiansen has done an excellent job in using Kemar Roofe as a makeshift forward with the talented Englishman churning out goalscoring performances. He now has ten goals for the season although it is evident Leeds United is yet to fill the gap left by Chris Wood.
Reports are now claiming that Leeds United are chasing PAOK forward Aleksandar Prijovic. The Serbian is in good form this season with 10 goals in 20 games this season. The 27-year old made his debut for the national team last summer and has been involved amongst the goals for his country.
The Serbian has played in the English League before and hence will not be a foreigner to the football in England. This would make him an ideal signing for Leeds United who will look to snap him up in January.
