Everton are now being considered a possibility to land Chelsea left-back Abdul Rahman Baba in the January transfer window. The Ghanian full-back has not made an appearance for Conte’s men despite being fit since October.
Signed from Augsburg in 2015, Abdul Baba Rahman has had a frustrating time at Chelsea. The Ghanian defender has only made 15 appearances for the club since his hefty €21.7 million switches from the German side.
An attacking left back in nature, Rahman was brought in as a back-up for Mourinho’s title-winning squad. However, a disastrous season at Chelsea saw every player fail to perform and things had to be shaken from the 2016-17 season. Baba Rahman failed to impress new boss Conte and was sent out on loan to Schalke to get some much-needed game time.
Rahman’s season at Schalke was cut short in January when the player suffered an unfortunate anterior cruciate ligament injury while serving his country at the African Cup of Nations. He returned to Chelsea at the end of the season where he continued his rehab. He returned to fitness and first-team training in September.
However, he has not yet shown any glimpses of potential and good form since his return and Chelsea who had his name omitted from their Premier League and Champions League squads have not yet found a reason to rue their mistake.
Come January Chelsea will get the chance to shuffle around names in their squads and Rahman will be hoping to claw his way back or find a way out to some other club to get some game time.
A move to Everton would suit him nicely and with Baines, at 32 and Cuco Martina only filling in as left back in the absence of another senior left back specialist; Baba Rahman is likely to get a host of chances to reach his peak.
As for the Toffees, the Everton board and owner Moshiri backed Ronald Koeman to bring in a host of summer signings that saw the club spend a net amount of £142.38m. Tipped by many to challenge the ‘top six’, Koeman’s side was expected to fight for a European spot this time. Nineteen matches into the season and Everton have just reached the top half of the table after a dreadful start to their new season.
In an Everton side, that is showing signs of rejuvenation, Baba Rahman would definitely be a bright signing for this side and hopefully, help the club and himself up to scratch.
